I live sometimes as if I have no anchor, as if I am at the mercy of the whipping winds and swelling seas.
But yesterday, in the inky darkness of predawn hours, a bit restless and reeling from the chaos of it all, I was reminded otherwise. As the writer of Hebrews once wrote, “We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure” (6:19).
We have this anchor.
Those words kept swirling in my soul, sinking deeper and deeper with each go around. We have this anchor. I could feel a steadying, a staying, a stilling, a strength.
We may not be spared storms or swelling seas but neither are we at their mercy. Hallelujah, we have an anchor that drops deep as the waters rise high. We have this anchor for our souls.
Forgetting this, I can be spun silly, drifting into uncharted waters and tumultuous territories.
Relentless waves lifted the ships high in the sky, then drove them down to the depths;
the sailors’ courage dissolved into misery.
They staggered and stumbled around like drunkards,
and they had no idea what to do.
In their distress, they called out to the Eternal,
and He saved them from their misery (Psalm 107: 26-28 Voice).
We can anchor to the depths of a God who holds us fast amidst fury and fear. It reminds me of Jesus asleep on the boat in the middle of mayhem and mess (Mark 4:38-40). Strong, firm, and steadfast, he had an anchor for his soul.
Let the seas do what they may,
You, O God, are our help and stay.
In order to weather, we must tether.
You are our anchor that holds.
Friend, if you’re feeling sick on the swelling seas, may God steady and stay your soul.

DEEPER DIVE
Ponder:
What are you anchoring your soul to? To what will you tether in order the weather the stormy seas that be?
Practice:
Try a breath prayer:
Inhale: Anchor of my soul
Exhale: Hold me fast
Play:
The song we’re playing this week is: Anchor by Skillet.
Pray:
Be an anchor to my soul in these swelling seas.
PS: As a little added bonus, here’s a Celtic prayer that is one of my favorites:
“Calm me, O Lord, as You stilled the storm;
Still me, O Lord; keep me from harm.
Let all the tumult within me cease.
Enfold me, Lord, in Your peace.”
You can listen to that prayer in song HERE.
A great read, as usual. I love your Dive Deeper questions.
